When Dad's In Charge

The hardest thing about the past week has been not being able to pick up Bryn. As some of you know, I'm recovering from surgery. The 4 days I spent in the hospital without my baby were hell. It was the first time I'd been away from her for more than a few hours at a time and it was awful.

It's heaven to be home with her again, but it's so hard not to be able to pick her up. She stands at my feet and says "up, up, up" and when I say "I'm sorry, dolly, mom can't" she says "mom, owie" and then says "up, up, up" again. It's extra hard when she wakes in the night and calls for me and I can't go get her out of her crib and rock her back to sleep. It breaks my heart. How do you make a 19-month-old understand such a thing? The next few weeks will be hard, though quite likely harder on me than Bryn!

The second hardest thing as been watching her dad dress her. I think he's gone color-blind and I hadn't realized he was so fashion-challenged. The first few days I was home I didn't say much. But after seeing the outfit pictured below I decided I had to step in and take over. I'm now back to picking out Bryn's clothes each day. In Girard's defense, I suppose I should mention Bryn was the one who insisted on wearing her housecoat!

A fashion don't: Red shirt, blue and grey fleece sweatpants, bright pink slipppers and peach housecoat. All very pretty clothes on their own, but certainly not together! (Though she still looks adorable.)

The upside to all of this is we're fortunate Girard is able to get time off work and can be home for a few weeks so we have more time to spend together. He's taught Bryn to call her stuffed teddies "Da Bears" and she watches football with him and says "hut, hut", though not always at the right time. Ah, the influence of a man.

Thanks to everyone for your concern and all the get well wishes while I was in the hospital and since I've been home. And an extra special thanks to my best friend, Cath, who is always there when I need her and Simone for coming to help Girard while I was in the hospital.

Oh man, do you guys ever make us laugh. I swear you both should write material for comediens.

So glad that Girard could get time off and you get some bonus family time.

Only 10 more months till next summer...looking forward to your visit!! If any other travelmates are reading this, is anyone else interested in coming to PEI next summer for a mini-reunion?

Rae, I'm glad to see that you're up and about again. You were moving around amazingly well the other day. Until Caia body slammed herself into your lap...sorry about that, I don't know what got into her. I know you're feeling much better just being at home.

Girard gets bonus points for getting clothes on a toddler! I'm not sure he's colour blind so much as sleep deprived with all those nightly wakenings!

Carolyn, as I interested in coming to PEI? You bet. But am I able to??? Once I win the lottery, I'm afraid. But stranger things have happened.

I love your blog updates so much. I usually giggle aloud the whole time, which I did again today only to pause with an "awww" at Bryn's sweet smile in the fashion photo. That's too funny about you having to step in and choose the outfits. I can just imagine what Paul would come up with too.

I love that Girard has taught Bryn to say "hut" "hut". Paul likes to teach Claire silly boy things too!

Shea, Caia made my day by wanting to sit on my lap! She's too tiny to have done any harm at all. And the hug she gave me when you left was an added bonus...what a sweetheart.

Girard may never be a wardrobe consultant, but Bryn would look gorgeous in anything.

Hope you have a speedy recovery so that you can scoop up that little bundle again.

I always get a kick out of your entries too! She looks fine to me - and you know what a fashion expert I am!!!!! Reminds me of the year I taught K fulltime for 7 months. James had to get H off in the am and when I asked her teacher how she thought she was adjusting to mama working she said everything was fine, but she could tell daddy was in charge because she often came mismatched and dissheveled! James always claimed she was so uncooperative and cranky that I should be thankful she got there at all:)
Glad to hear your on the mend. The other day a friend of mine reminded me that in regards to all Ava's medical stuff right now, that she will never remember any of it later on - I guess the same goes for your not being able to pick Bryn up etc. Once she's back in your arms, it will be a lost memory.

I thought we'd talk about PEI at our Saskatoon reunion in February!?
